Where Did the German Shepherd Originate?
The German Shepherd, as the name suggests, originated in Germany in the late 19th century. The breed was developed primarily for herding sheep, which is why they were initially called “German Sheepdogs.” Their intelligence, strength, and ability to work long hours made them ideal for this role.
The man credited with creating the modern German Shepherd is Captain Max von Stephanitz, a former cavalry officer. He aimed to develop a versatile working dog that could excel in various tasks, from herding to guarding.
